Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Ever

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Ever?

I love cookies. I really do. A good chocolate chip cookie is like my Kryptonite. I can’t resist it.

The challenge with great chocolate chip cookies is trying to make the perfect one at home. Over the years I have tried dozens of recipes and techniques. I have searched high and low for the best chocolate chip cookie ever.

Is this recipe the best chocolate chip cookie ever? Well, I will say that it ticks a lot of my boxes. For one, it is simple and easy to make. It doesn’t require complex techniques or fussy ingredients. The most complicated technique is turning on the mixer. Every ingredient is one you either have in your kitchen or you can get in ANY grocery store–so no need to search specialty stores or buy online. Two big checks right there.

The cookies bake up pretty. I know that sounds silly, but I am a visual person. I hate when homemade cookies look, well, homemade. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I am such a food snob. I know it. I want my homemade cookies to look like they came from a bakery. Isn’t that the silliest, stupidest thing ever? I know it is. However, it is a big deal to me. The cookies need to bake uniformly, consistently and they need to be pretty. This recipe gets the job done. Big check mark there.

Simple to make. Check. No fussy ingredients. Check. Pretty. Check. Now the taste, that is essential too. These are delicious. They have just the right amount of buttery sweetness to compliment the chocolate. The chocolate you use can of course affect the flavor of the cookies, but the mix I used was perfect for my palate. (By the way, I like a mix of milk chocolate and semi-sweet chips. However, you can use all milk chocolate, all semi-sweet or whatever you prefer.)

So. Is this the best chocolate chip cookie ever? It’s pretty close. I will never stop searching for that ultimate cookie. That holy grail of chocolate chip cookies is out there. I know it. However, in the mean time, this is a darn good cookie that I will be coming back to again and again.

Is this the best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever? It sure ticks a lot of my boxes: Easy to make. No fussy techniques or ingredients. Bakes up pretty. Tastes delicious. In my book, that adds up to a pretty darn good cookie.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup salted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed

  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 2 cups chocolate chips (or chunks, or chopped chocolate)*

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Using a stand mixer, cream together butter and sugars until combined.
  • Beat in eggs and vanilla until fluffy.
  • Mix in the dry ingredients until combined.
  • Remove bowl from mixer. Stir in chocolate chips by hand. Dough will be very thick. A sturdy wooden spoon is recommended.
  • Roll 2 tablespoons of dough at a time into balls and place them evenly spaced on your prepared cookie sheets.
  • Bake in preheated oven for approximately 8-10 minutes. Take them out when they are just BARELY starting to turn brown.
  • Let them sit on the baking pan for 2 minutes before removing to cooling rack.

Notes

  • * I personally like a mix of semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips. I think it creates a nice balance. However, it is ok to use chocolate with your preferred level of sweetness.
  • DO NOT over-bake these chocolate chip cookies! At the end of the baking time, the cookies should look doughy, and might be lightly browned in a few places. If they look undercooked, that is ok, don’t worry! If you over bake these cookies, they will lose their doughy, chewy texture.
